Secretary of State Trey Grayson addresses our servicewomen and servicemen overseas before the 2004 General Election. The recording was accessed by thousands of Kentuckians serving in the United States military prior to Election Day 2004.

Hello, this is Trey Grayson, Secretary of State and Chief Elections Officer for the Commonwealth of Kentucky.  Our country is so blessed to have open and fair elections.  Without your daily hard work and sacrifice, this and other freedoms would not be available to America’s citizens.  The right to choose our leaders would not be possible without your bravery and dedication to the American principles that we all hold so dear.

I join the rest of Kentucky and our great nation in thanking you for your service.  I have had many family members and friends serve our country in the military.  It is no easy task leaving your loved ones to defend America.  Know that I appreciate all that you do for the United States, her citizens, and for the generations of Americans to come.  You are role models for our future leaders, and you bring to life the importance of being an active citizen.

Part of our responsibility as Americans is to vote in every election.  I understand the difficulty that you may face in fulfilling this responsibility due to your service away from Kentucky.  Hopefully, this message will allow you to gain greater access to one of the greatest rights afforded to American citizens.  As a U.S. service personnel member, you especially deserve the chance to express your right to vote.

This fall, on November 2, Kentuckians have the opportunity to vote for their next President of the United States, United States Senator, U.S. Congresspersons, and State Legislators.  It is my hope that you will take the time to study these candidates and place your vote for the candidate that you believe will best serve you in the upcoming future.

To help you in this process, please be aware that information is available to you on our website at www.kysos.com.  From there you can access specific information about military voting, candidates, and other pertinent election information.

As a reminder, the Federal Post Card Application must be received by fax or postmarked on or before October 4th in order to register to vote.  The Federal Post Card Application may also be used to obtain your absentee ballot.  That request must be received by fax or postmarked by October 26th in order to be eligible to receive a ballot.  While this deadline is in late October, we recommend that you make your request early in order for you to have sufficient time to receive your ballot and send it back in to your county clerk’s office by election day.

The Federal Post Card Application, as well as directions, and other pertinent information are also available on our website.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 502-564-3490.

Again, I cannot thank you enough for the protection that you provide for this great country.  The prayers and thoughts of a grateful commonwealth and nation go out for you and your fellow soldiers.  Return soon to Kentucky and may God bless you.  May God continue to bless the United States of America.
