On November 8, 2011, the citizens of Kentucky elected Comer Commissioner of Agriculture for the Commonwealth. Comer officially took office as Commissioner of Agriculture on January 2, 2012, vacating the remainder of his term in the House of Representatives, 53rd District.
On January 3, 2012, pursuant to KRS 118.730, House Speaker Greg Stumbo issued a Writ of Election to fill the vacancy, which was certified by the Secretary of State’s office.
The deadline for Republican and Democratic candidates nominated by their political parties and Independent candidates to file their petitions with the Secretary of State is 4 p.m. EST on January 10, 2012. The Special Election will be held on Tuesday, February 7, 2012.
“The Secretary of State’s office looks forward to processing the filings for this Special Election and working with the Clerks in the 53rd House District to ensure a fair election,” said Secretary Grimes.
