Secretary of State Addresses Students at Senior Student Government Day

Today, Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes addressed seniors from Murray High School and Calloway County High School at the annual Senior Student Government Day, the culmination of a program designed to increase participation in the election process.

Previously, seniors at both high schools campaigned in a mock election for city and county government positions. Last week, other students voted for candidates using the same voting machines currently used in local elections, which were furnished by Calloway County Clerk, Ray Coursey Jr. Coursey also made available during the mock election voter registration cards. The students who won their respective elections were invited to participate in Senior Student Government Day, which includes the opportunity to shadow elected city and county officials and attend a luncheon at the Curris Center on the Murray State University Campus.

Secretary Grimes, Kentucky’s chief election official and advocate for civic education and engagement, congratulated the participants and sponsors for their commitment to civic involvement. Grimes remarked that the torch had passed to a new generation and encouraged participants to “stand tall, be creative, and use the skills you have learned to take the torch and make a difference,” noting that “history demands that we have new vision, new ideas, and new leadership if we are to achieve greatness.” 

This is the sixth year for Senior Student Government Day. The program is sponsored by the Murray Lions Club, with cooperation and assistance from the Murray State University Student Government Association, City of Murray, Calloway County Government, Calloway County High School and Murray High School.
