(Frankfort, KY)— Secretary of State Trey Grayson today urged all New Orleans’ Hurricane Katrina evacuees, who have temporarily relocated to Kentucky, to immediately contact the Louisiana Secretary of State in order to participate in the upcoming Orleans Parish elections. Elections postponed in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita will be held April 22 and May 20.

“I want to ensure that no eligible voter in Kentucky is denied an opportunity to vote, and this includes our visitors from Louisiana,” Secretary Grayson said.  “It’s important that all evacuees exercise their right to vote in Louisiana’s upcoming elections.”

Registered Louisiana voters who have temporarily relocated to Kentucky are still eligible to vote in their home parishes if they have not registered to vote in Kentucky or another state.  Those voters have three opportunities to vote: by mail using an absentee ballot, in person at the Registrar of Voters’ Office six to 12 days before an election, or in person at the polling place on Election Day.

For those evacuees who have chosen to make Kentucky their new home, they still have the opportunity to register to vote for the upcoming May 16th primary election.  Any citizen wishing to vote in that election will need to register by April 17, 2006.  Voter registration cards can be obtained by visiting the local county clerk’s office or by downloading a printable version from: www.sos.ky.gov/register.

Kentucky has had a number of evacuees choose the Commonwealth as their home, temporarily or permanently, since the devastating storms that affected our neighbors to the south.  We want to do our part to ensure that they are still engaged in the elections process in a lawful manner, whether that is in Louisiana or Kentucky,” commented Grayson.

Hurricane Katrina evacuees who would like more information on how to check their current registration status, register to vote or cast a ballot should contact Louisiana Secretary of State Al Ater’s Office at 1-800-883-2805 or via email at elections@sos.louisiana.gov.

Louisiana voters may download an application to vote absentee by visiting: http://www.sos.louisiana.gov/elections/MISC/request_absentee_ballot.pdf
