(FRANKFORT, KY) – Secretary of State Trey Grayson today officially announced the launch of a new online application that allows constituents to track the progress of service of summonses on nonresidents. The new service coincides with the launch of a new website for the Office of the Secretary of State, which also features online access to business forms previously unavailable via the world wide web.
“I am delighted that our office continues to make more information available through our outstanding website,” stated Secretary Grayson. “By providing more services online, government becomes more accessible and citizen-friendly.”
The new online service allows lawyers, the media, and other general constituents to determine when the summons was received in the Office of the Secretary of State and when it was mailed to the defendant and court of jurisdiction. The service also provides a direct link to the United States Postal System tracking service which will display when the summons was delivered by certified mail.
“This new online service will be a tremendous asset to those who work with summonses. By placing it online, we create an efficient way for lawyers and other citizens to conduct their business,” commented Grayson.
In order to serve a summons, the Office of the Secretary of State must receive two copies of the signed and dated summons and two copies of the complaint attested by the court clerk. Citizens should first contact the circuit court clerk in the jurisdiction in which the lawsuit was filed to begin the service of summonses process.
The Office made available online for the first time popular business forms such as reinstatement packets for organizations that have been administratively dissolved as well as a Statement of Change of Registered Agent/Office and a Statement of Change of Principal Office. Citizens will now be able to view and print these services by utilizing the Office of the Secretary of State’s website.
“These new services represent the continuation of an effort to make our services more accessible to the public. My office looks forward to making more online services available in the future,” Grayson said.
Secretary Grayson already announced additional online services since he took office. Just recently, online access to several corporate certificates that could previously only be requested by phone was made available, including forms such as the Certificate of Existence, the Certificate of Authorization, and the Annual Report. Last year, access to portions of the Governor’s Executive Journal, final copies of enacted legislation of the Commonwealth, and Revolutionary War Patents were made available to the public via the World Wide Web.
The website was built by the Office of the Secretary of State in partnership with Kentucky.gov, which also built and maintains the Commonwealth’s official website at www.kentucky.gov.
