Frankfort -- Governor Steve Beshear’s appointee to the Office of Secretary of State, former Bowling Green Mayor Elaine Walker, was sworn in at noon today. Walker took office making a commitment to serve the Commonwealth by upholding the integrity of the office, promoting business services and working with all of the 120 county clerks to ensure transparency in the election process.
Beshear stated during the ceremony “It’s imperative that the Secretary of State be someone who is sensitive to the needs of businesses and particularly small businesses in the Commonwealth, well ladies and gentlemen, Elaine Walker is that person.”
“My choice is a woman who as a two time mayor of one of Kentucky's largest cities has demonstrated progressive leadership, not just in her community, but also on regional, state, and national levels.” Beshear remarked.
Walker thanked the Governor for his trust and support saying “I am humbled by the opportunity and look forward to taking this Office to the next level.” The Secretary will begin work Monday and plans to travel the state meeting with County Clerks to listen and learn about their issues and facilitate solutions to problems they face.
Walker also intends to begin working with the legislature and other state agencies to promote business growth and economic development in Kentucky. “The Secretary of State’s Office it the first agency businesses deal with in Kentucky. We want them to come to our state and hire our citizens. My office will work hard to make the transition efficient and effective” said Walker.
